Using a Google Maps interface you can pan, zoom, and go bonkers crazy over the level of detail captured in a selection of expansive vistas. Plus, XRez founding fathers Eric Hanson and Greg Downing share their techniques and process so we can say that we learnt something while drooling over the insanely massive photographs in their unprecedented gigapixel detail. It really is something to behold. According to Hanson, at the last showing of one of their 18' long, 75,000 pixel prints, people were exploring single photographs for up to 20 minutes at a time.

But it's not all for fun and games (although trying to find the white SUV in the snow fields of the Sierra Madres was quite enjoyable), the site also demonstrates how the images can be integrated into the world of 3D animation. Cinematic camera movement can be created, and unique hybrid 2D/3D locations can be built using 3D software. Nice, very nice.

J’ai appelé ainsi ces images non pas pour leur gigantisme (elles atteignent maintenant les 2 milliards de pixels et pèsent jusqu’à 30 Go) mais par référence à l’hyperréalisme. Ce mot m’est venu naturellement sans que je cherche à en faire l’analyse. Cette conférence m’a donné l’occasion de me pencher sur ce qu’est l’hyperréalisme, et j’ai été troublé. Je ne réalisais pas à quel point ce courant de peinture m’avait influencé. Toutes les définitions que je lui ai trouvé s’appliquent parfaitement à mon travail. Je cite en résumant : L’hyperréalisme a pu être vu comme une reproduction froide et mécanique du réel par des virtuoses laborieux, illusionnistes, qui font confondre au spectateur photographie et peinture. C’est trop réducteur : La lente et laborieuse élaboration du tableau, l’effort humain que cela représente donne un vision intensifiée et densifiée d’un sujet le plus souvent volontairement banal. Il y a une folie fascinante et effrayante qui se dégage de ce travail. L’hyperréalisme a facilité une fertilisation croisée entre la photo et la peinture. Le peintre hyperréaliste est d’abord un photographe, la photo est au cœur de son processus. Je suis un photographe mais aussi un peintre numérique, la retouche, le montage et la synthèse d’images étant au cœur de mon processus.

Avant
